Overview

As well as a Nativity play, many schools like to celebrate Christmas with a whole-school service in the traditional style of readings and songs. Telling the Nativity story in sections, each narrated by a different class or year group and followed by a song, is a popular way of bringing the school community together to celebrate the true meaning of Christmas.

However, this can be a time-consuming job for the teacher tasked with putting such a service together, at one of the most hectic times in the school calendar. Finding or writing text at an appropriate, differentiated level for each age group is a challenge, as is sourcing and distributing songs to be learned and performed by every class in school.

So, we’ve done all that for you! Here is an engaging narration of the Nativity story, divided into 8 key parts, differentiated so the text from each part can be delivered by multiple children from whichever age group or class you decide. Also included are 24 original, lively, catchy songs – a choice of 3 to accompany each part of the narration. These have been selected from our catalogue of popular Nativity musicals for all ages. Of course, there may be tried and tested songs or texts your school uses, so this resource enables you to easily mix and match your favourite poems, narrations and carols to create a well-paced and enjoyable service.

Characters

As this is not a musical/script like most of our other titles, the Nativity story is told by narrators – there are no dramatic ‘characters’ as such.

We recommend that the narrations for each part of the story are delivered by 5 children, although your numbers may allow for many more, perhaps all reading a sentence each. Alternatively, if you have few willing or able narrators, a single child (or even a teacher) from each class or year group could read an entire part.

The presentation of a Nativity tableau would be a fitting visual addition to your service. In a separate area of your hall, as individuals and groups are mentioned throughout the story, they could assemble in a growing collection of traditionally-costumed Nativity characters, until Joseph, Mary, the donkey, the innkeeper, shepherds, wise men and angels are all gathered around a manger for the final song.
